Access your home folder from home

This document explains how you can access your home folder (H:) on the server from home on a computer running Windows XP. You need a fast Internet connection (ADSL or equivalent) to make this run smoothly.

Method 1: Create a Network Place

Click on the Start button and open My Network Places

Click on Add a network place

Click Next

Write the address https://users.ssb.be/username (where username is your username). Click Next.

Click View Certificate

Click Install Certificate

Click Next

Click Finish

Click Yes to install the certificate

Click OK

Click Yes

Write your User name and Password and click OK.

Click Next

Click Finish

Log on once more. Now your home folder opens.

Next time you want to open your home folder you can go directly to My Network Places. You can also make a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the home folder and selecting Send To Desktop (create shortcut).

Method 2: Open a Web Folder

Select Open in the File menu in Internet Explorer. Open the Internet address https://users.ssb.be/username (where username is your username), check the box Open as Web Folder and click OK.

Install the certificate as described above.

Best practice

Copy documents from your home folder to your local hard drive and work on the documents locally. Copy them back to the home folder when you are finished.
You can run Office documents directly from the home folder (then you have to log on once again) but if there is a network problem your changes might be lost.
